Four personswere injured, one of them fatally, and the portion of the building thathad housed the refrigerating plant was razed. The property loss wasestimated at $15,000. A general view of the scene shortly after theaccident is shown on the front Fi.,. I. The tank that exploded was 43 inches in diameter by 10 ft. long,and was 7/16 inch thick. The heads were of the convex, or plus,type, approximately 17/32 inch thick. They were flanged and fittedinside of the shell, the turn of the flange being then welded to the endof the shell. Figure i shows a duplicate of the exploded vessel thatwas part of a standby unit. The exploded vessel was of autogenouslywelded construction throughout, all longitudinal and girth seams hav-ing been made by that process. It had been installed about five yearspreviously. It was equipped with a safety valve. The operatingpressure varied from 150 to 225 lbs.
