Eastern wall, with battlements and cannons, of the Mount Fortress (Fortaleza do monte), Macau, China

The Fortaleza do Monte, on Mount Hill, 52m above sea level, was built by the Jesuits in the 16th century (Macau becoming a Portuguese enclave in 1555). In 1622 it held off an attempted Dutch invasion. With the main threat being from the sea to the east the walls on that side of the fort have a wide granite base with battlements and cannon at the top. The fort, with four corner bulwarks, has an area of 8000 square metres. The historic centre of Macau is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
