Illustration of the Italian-US geneticist Mario Capecchi (born 1937). Capecchi is best know for his work on targeted gene modification in mice, a process for replacing a single gene, to determine its function. These 'knockout mice' have been widely used as models of human diseases. Capecchi was awarded the 2007 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine together with Oliver Smithies and Martin Evans for his work on gene targeting.
