In 1876 the Democrats nominated for governor their ableCivil War veteran candidate, General John S. Phelps, aUnion Democrat of Springfield. Phelps was a native ofConnecticut. He had been a consistent Democrat before,during, and after the war. During the war he had com-manded a Union regiment. He was a lawyer of was one of Missouris strong governors and received thelargest majority vote cast for a Missouri governor from Missouri Politics, 1870-1904 187. 1840 to 1920. The most markedfeatures during Governor Phelpsadministration were the rapid re-covery of the country to pros-perity, demand for currency re-form, financial support of theschools, strikes, and the election ofGeorge G. Vest to the UnitedStates Senate. The depressionwhich had begun in 1873 con-tinued for five years, but by 1879prosperity again began to appearand continued five years. Businessbecame better. However, the john s. phelps price of corn was low until 1881, being around fifty cents abushel, and the people were still in debt. This brought about a demand for more money and areform in the currency 1878 the Democratic party ad-vocated the issue of greebacks andthe unlimited coinage of silver togive the country more of Missouris congressmen,Richard P. Bland, of Lacledecounty, was the leader in Congresson this reform. H
