Potato blight fungus. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a section of a potato leaf infected with potato blight fungus (Phytophthora infestans). Fungal sporangiophores (grey, upper centre) are seen emerging through pores (stoma) on the surface of the leaf. Their sporangia pods (tips, grey) become detached and float away, spreading the infection to other potato plants. This section reveals the leaf's cells and air spaces (lower frame). A leaf hair (trichome) is seen at upper left. Phytophthora infestans infection results in severe damage to the potato plant, and was responsible for the 1845 Irish potato famine.
