Stratospheric ozone research. Technician releasing a balloon to measure stratospheric ozone over the Arctic. This gas filters most of the harmful ultraviolet radiation from sunlight. Ozone levels decline over the Arctic each spring as it is destroyed by chlorine released by human activities. This research was part of a joint project by NASA and the European Union to look at the amount and rate of stratospheric ozone depletion. Numerous balloon releases took place between November 1999 and March 2000. Photographed at Esrange Research Station, Kiruna, which lies inside the Arctic Circle in Swedish Lapland.
