Five Agave caribaeicola 'Century Plants' growing on a roadside hillslope, near Belair, Hillsborough, Carriacou, West Indies


At 34 square kilometres (13 square miles) and 16 mile long, Carriacou is the largest island of the Grenadines. The climate is tropical and the hilly terrain slopes to white beaches. There are no rivers and local residents rely on rainwater for their water supply. Boat-building, fishing and sea-faring feature in the local economy. A rural view of Agave caribaeicola (Century Plants) on the edge of a roadside, near Belair, north of Hillsborough, the main settlement. Agave plants have long, lanceolate leaves up to 2m ( ft) long and 20cm (8in) wide. A tall central panicle up to 8m (26ft) tall rises from the plant, when in bloom. Agave plants are most common on the sheltered leeward slopes of Carriacou.
