. American engineer . valve disk never leaves the face of the valve, hut is tightlypressed thereto, it is impossible for scale or sediment to getlietueen them and thereliy cause leakage, which is the commondefect of bb w-otT valves Another good in this valve isthe construction of the case, which is made in halves and boltedtogether, Tliis is more expensive than the solid case used inmost other valves, but the accessibility for repairs and inspec-tion attained by this feature is a strong point of merit. liy unbolting the two bonnets the wdiole working mechanism< f the valve can be taken out without the use of hand tools, andthe faces may be re-surfaced in ten or fifteen minutes and madeas good as new. The valve face is chilled and ground, and thedisk is made of the very hardest nickel bronze, giving a remark-able wearing quality to these surfaces. This valve has no stuff-ing box, and it will be seen that the meclianism is arranged onvery much closer centers tlian would be possible if the stuffing. Everlasting BIcw-off Valve. box were used. A much smoother pull is thus secured, and thismaterially reduces the effort required to open and close the valve. The inlet orifice is made tapered and slightly smaller than theopening in the valve face; that is, it is choke bored. As theseopenings are eccentric and very close together, the greater partof the solid matter which is carried out with the blow-ofif entersthe discharge pipe without impinging upon the valve face at relieves the face from much of the wear it would other-wise have. By this means also there is obtained a syphoningaction which cleans the valve at each operation. The valve issimple, compact, very strong and very rarely requires large experience with these valves shows that they are prac-tically self-grinding, as the disk revolves when being instructions state that the valves should be operated fre-quently, at least once a day, as this tends to keep them in goodconditi
