Mendelian inheritance display. Four possibilities are shown here for colour inheritance in guinea pigs: white plus black produces hybrid black; white plus hybrid black produces white and hybrid black; black plus hybrid black produces black and hybrid black; and hybrid black plus hybrid black produces black, white and hybrid black. This display, produced by the American Eugenics Society (AES, founded 1923), was used in its campaigns to educate the public about genetics. Eugenics is the controversial practice of selectively improving the genetics of human populations. The AES and other eugenics organisations were criticised for their racist assumptions. Photographed circa 1926.
