Coast Guard Officer Awarded Legion Of Merit. Captain Henry T. Read, Fleet Administrative Officer in Boston, pins the Legion of Merit upon Captain Charles W. Thomas, Coast Guard, of 1510 East Ocean, Long Beach, Calif. The award was made for his "exceptionally meritorious Commander of a Greenland patrol task unit." Captain Thomas was cited for inflicting "severe damage on enemy installations and outposts in the northeast Greenland area. Operating north of the Arctic Circle at a time when ice and weather conditions were extremely bad, he maneuvered his ship through heavy ice, dense fog, and unpredictable currents to close an isolated island on which the enemy had established a weather station. Taking the garrison completely by surprise, he landed a force which destroyed the enemy installation. Later he relocated an enemy armed traveler whose presence in the area was known. After an extensive chase through heavy pack ice, he closed the enemy, opened fire, and forced the enemy ship to surrender.".
