Active galaxy NGC 1365. True-colour optical image of the active barred spiral galaxy NGC 1365 in the constellation Fornax. This is an example of a Seyfert galaxy, which have a highly-energetic nucleus with an energy output comparable to that of quasars. The nucleus of this galaxy contains a powerful emitter of X-rays. This galaxy is a member of the Fornax Cluster of galaxies, a group which lies around 70 million light years away. NGC 1365 is one of the nearest of the Seyfert galaxies, most of which are extremely distant. This image was produced by digitally combining photographs taken by the UK Schmidt Telescope in blue and red light.
