Sopwith Camels of the 148th American Aero Squadron at Petite Sythe (today part of Dunkerque), France, on 6 August 1918. The Camel, a British single-seat biplane fighter aircraft was introduced on the Western Front during the First World War in 1917. It was powered by a single rotary engine and was armed with twin synchronized Vickers machine guns. In total, Camel pilots have been credited with downing 1,294 enemy aircraft, more than any other Allied fighter of the conflict.
