He receivedhis early education in the prepara-tory schools of Boston, ^^lassachu-setts. and of San Francisco, attend-ing public high school in Californiaand later continuing his studies atSanta Clara College, from which hegraduated in 1897. He completedhis academic education at St. Igna-tius University in 1899, having dis-played throughout his entire educa-tional period an aptitude for studi-ous application which was particu-larly evidenced in the thoroughnessof his preparation for the legal pro-fession. He had early decided uponthe law as a career and upon leaving St. Ignatius became a studentat the Hastings College of Law and was admitted to practice in allthe State and Federal Courts in 1901 at San Francisco.
