It is transfused with that pale primrose lightwhich is at times seen at sunset, and which is asbeautiful as it is rare. To seize and reproduce an effectso fleeting and so seldom visible, requires the highestpowers of memory in a painter. His position may becompared with that of a musician undertaking to writedown, note by note from memory, a long sonata whichhe has heard but once. To do this, deep knowledge aswell as memory is needed, and a further touch ofgenius, lacking which no man can be a great painteror musician. Vicat Cole has surmounted every difficulty in thispicture with masterly success. To begin with the sub-ject, it is a view which presents many uninterestinglines. The writer remembers going down the river toMarlow with the artist when he was thinking of.
