In1844, at the age of thirty years, he was appointed dis-trict attorney of Essex county, and held that office formore than six years, having been, at the expiration ofthe term of his appointment in 1847, nominated andelected as a democrat in that strong and ever-reliablewhig county. At the formation of the republicanpaity in that county he was requested to take the partynomination for that office again, but declined, beingalways a democrat and having no sympathy with thenew movement. He was the postmaster at Ticon-deroga under the administration of President Polk,and master in chancery and a supreme court com-missioner of the state of New York. He continuedin a successful practice of the law in that town untilthe year 1857, when he removed to the city of Troy,N.
