In 1673 there were in operation five iron works,whose principal output was used exclusively by the opulence thus thrust upon them led some to lead a lifethat w^as condemned by many and the church failed, in ameasure, in its control over such. It was in marked contrastto the great strictness maintained under Winthrop in theexecution of the laws when vice and crime were crushedunder both by civil and church authorities. Extortion thenin profit on goods or work was punished severely; a profit ofthirty-three per cent was unholy and a fine on the one guilty. STOCKS was the result. In 1640 the town authorized Edward Palmerto build a pair of stocks, in which violators of the laws mightbe placed. The price which he charged was considered soexcessive that the fathers compelled him to inaugurate themby ordering him to be confined in them for one hour.
