Keanakakoi Caldera, Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Keanakakoi means "place of the adze" - Hawaiians use basalt rock from within this crater to make tools. The floor is covered by lava from the 1974 eruption. The crater is 115 feet (35 m) deep and about 1,500 feet (450 m) wide. The tree to the left is an 'ohi'a lehua, of the genus Metrosideros. The name derives from the Greek metra or "heartwood" and sideron or "iron". Scientific classification: Kingdom: Plantae; Division: Magnoliophyta; Class: Magnoliopsida; Order: Myrtales; Family: Myrtaceae; Genus: Metrosideros; Species: M. polymorpha. Closely related to the Australian bottle brushes.
