The only wild sheep found throughout the continent of Africa isthe arui or fechstal of the Arabs, the udad or Barbary sheep ofnaturalists ; a species with horns not very unlike those of the bharal, and also lacking glands on the face, but readily distinguished by itsuniformly tawny colour, the fringe of long hair depending from thethroat, chest, and the upper portion of the fore-legs, and the unusuallength of the tail, which exceeds that of all other wild sheep. In thelength of this appendage the arui approaches domesticated sheep, ofwhich, however, it is not the ancestor. Height at shoulder about3 feet 3 inches.
