The proportions and general arrangement of the whole edifice are distinctly and accuratelygiven in this elevation; and so far as it was possible to depict them on so small a scale, even theminute ornamental peculiarities are delineated. The discordancies in the architectural character ofthe western towers, and that of the other parts of this Church, as well as the great difference betweenthe latter and Henry the Sevenths Chapel, will be readily comprehended by examining this print, inconjunction with the sectional Elevation in Plate NORTH PORTICO DESCRIBED. 9 our Sovereigns, must have been ushered beneath its Porch to give interestand effect to the solemnities within. The front elevation of this Transept consists of such a considerablevariety of parts, that it. becomes extremely difficult to describe it with dueaccuracy, without being tedious. Its general appearance, however, hasbeen greatly changed since the commencement of the last century, as willbe evident by comparing the ensuing extract with the description that willafterwards be given. On the north side, this noble and lofty fabric is much deformed anddefaced, partly by the many close adjacent buildings, but much more by thenorth winds, which driving the corroding and piercing smoke of the sea-coals from the city that way, have so impaired and changed her formerbeauties, that the remnants thereof
