IR CHARLES LYELL, distinguishedas a geologist, was born at Kinnordy,Scotland, in 1797. He graduated atExeter college, Oxford, in 1821, andstudied law, but abandoned it forgeological investigation. In 1832 hewas appointed professor of geology atKings college, London, but this posi-tion he soon resigned. In 1830appeared the first volume of his im-portant work, Principles of Geology,which was completed in 1834, andwas received with great favor. Hevisited the United States in 1841,lecturing on his favorite science in Boston. On his return toEngland he published his travels and scientific observations in thiscountry, and wrote other treatises onthe geology of America. A second visitto the United States, in 1845, resulted intwo additional volumes. He also trav-eled extensively in Europe, gave theworld the benefit of this expedition andits results, and received the honor ofknighthood, with other testimonials ofscientific appreciation.
