Ancient Egyptian seated statue of the goddess Sakhmet, 1410- 1372 BC 16th Dynasty, Mut Temple Karnak. Kunsthistorisches Muesum Vienna inv AS 78. Diorite, H 186 cm. Amenhotep III erected hundreds of statues of the leonine goddess Sakhmet in the precinct of Mut at Karnak and in his own memorial temple. Shoshenq I (931–910 BC) replaced Amenhotep III’s cartouche here with his own. “Giovanni B. Belzoni,” the name of the man who apparently found ÄS 77 and ÄS 78 in the Mut Temple, is inscribed on both statues.
