A farmer primes an irrigation pump outside of Nanighi. If it weren’t for the nearby Tana River, Nanighi’s families would not be able to grow the maize and vegetables they need to survive. The nearby river also has a dark side. During the 1997 El Niño rainfall reached extraordinary levels and the Tana flooded, washing away many of the irrigation pumps sited along its banks. Each pump costs thousands of dollars to replace.
