The Virgin of the Catholic Kings. This painting, by an unknown Castilian artist, dates from the end of the 15th century. It shows two Catholic monarchs, and their courts, venerating the Madonna and Child. The King, at left, is Ferdinand II of Aragon (1452-1516). The Queen, at right, is Isabella of Castile (1451-1504). The two married in 1469, paving the way for their grandson, Carlos I, to rule a united Spain. Ferdinand and Isabella were known as the Catholic Monarchs.
