Erupting molars. Coloured pan-oral X-ray of the mouth of a child, showing erupting molars. It is the developing second molars (yellow) of the lower jaw that have been highlighted, their crowns still below the level of the other teeth. Second molars erupt at 11 to 13 years of age. The flattened crowns of the molar teeth provide a surface for grinding and chewing food. Other secondary teeth are also seen replacing the younger milk teeth, particularly in the tooth-crowded upper jaw. A pan-oral X-ray provides a view of all the teeth in the mouth.
