The series street lighting comprises GS3miles of No. G wire divided into 29 cir-cuits, 601 miles of streets. Thecircuits are connected two in series 100-light air-cooled Fort Wayneconstant circuit transformers. Each ofthese is equipped on the primary sidewith a small solenoid-operated oil switchmade by the department, and with a testboard with plug switches. This arrange-ment keeps all pressure above 125 voltsaway from the switchboard. The voltageon the circuit varies with the number andkind of lamps from 2,500 volts to 500volts. In all there are G92 lamps, 5,315 40-c. p. tungsten lamps, and 199 300-c. p. tungsten lamps. Thelarge tungsten lamps were manufacturedespecially for the department by the November, Wli LIGHTING 465. 466 MUNICIPAL ENGINEERING General Electric Company. They haveproved satisfactory in every respect, giv-ing steadier, better distributed light andaveraging over 2,000 hours ot life. The40-c. p. tungstens are mounted by goosenecks on the line poles. This type oflamp is ideal for its purpose, since itgives light in small units at a minimumcost for maintenance and power. The test ot the series lighting circuitsshows an all-day efBciency for 1911 of cent, from the switchboard to thelamp. The loss in the transformers per cent., and in the line per cent. Seatlles cluster lighting system is oneof the finest in existence and is generallyadmired by tourists and visitors from allparts of the country. The main businessavenues are lighted by five-lamp poles, placed opposite each other at the curb lineand spaced 80 and 90 feet. The usual de-sign of a five-lamp pole places tour globesin the form of a cross, with one center topglobe. The Seattle poles, howev
