GEORGE REMARKABLE PERSONS. 285 JOHN JAMES HEIDEGGER was the son of aclergyman, and a native of Zurich, in Switzerland, where he married, but left his country in consequenceof an intrigue ; and, having visited the principal citiesof Europe, in the humble station of a domestic, ac-quired a taste for elegant and refined pleasures, which, united to a strong inclination for voluptuousness, bydegrees qualified him for the management of publicamusements. When he was between forty and fiftyyears of age, he accompanied a nobleman to England,in the capacity of a genteel dependant companion ;and by his sprightly, engaging conversation, and insi-nuating address, he soon worked himself into thegood graces of our young people of fashion. Thejudicious remarks he made on several defects in theconduct of our Operas at that time, and the hints hethrew out for improving the entertainments at theKings Theatre, soon established bis character as agood critic.
