. The Street railway journal . othe city treasury as a compensation for the use of thestreets. In the case of certain of the lines, preliminary tothe introduction of electric traction, an extension of fran-chise for fifty years from the expiration of the originalfranchise has recently been sold at public auction, although company, and which embraces about ten miles of doubletrack construction. Although this is not at present thelargest street railway system in the city, it is the only oneas yet operated by electric power. The franchise of thiscompany is one of the most valuable in the city, the tracksbeing located on one of the most desirable avenues, con-tiguous to a large population, and the system enjoys aliberal patronage, and the cars are run faster and on ashorter headway than any other line of equal length withwhich we are acquainted in the entire country. On securing the permit for electric traction, thefranchise of the company was extended for twenty-fiveyears from 1908, for which the company paid the city. FIG. 1.—BIRDS-EYE VIEW OF JACKSON SQUARE AND ST. LOUIS CATHEDRAL—NEW ORLEANS, LA. the original franchise has not yet expired, so that becauseof the fact that some companies are operating under anold franchise and others under newer ones, there is con-siderable confusion regarding this subject. The linescontrolled by the New Orleans Traction Company arenow operated under a franchise secured at public auction, the grant giving an extension of fifty years from 1901 forthe lines of the Crescent City Railroad Company, an ex-tension for the same period for the New Orleans City &Lake Railroad Company from January. 1906. In the caseof the latter company the ordinance provides that theamount paid to the city for the franchise shall be expended for the purpose of inaugurating and securing an im-proved system of drainage and public permanent improve-ments for the city. A condition also provides that thecity may take over the franchises and property of thecompany
