Guilmants organ prelude, Lamentation,played by Prof. Henry Eyre Browne, the former organist of the BrooklynTabernacle, opened the services. Then, at the request of the Rev. Dr. Carson,who presided, the audience sang the hymn, Jesus, Lover of My Soul, Carson explained, had been a great favorite with Dr. Talmage. Aninvocation by the Rev. Orrin G. Cocks, Dr Carsons assistant, followed, afterwhich Dr, Carson made a brief address. He said: 361. THE WORLDS TRIBUTE 363 REV. CARSONS ADDRESS This vast assemblage is the eulogy of this afternoon. No word that shallbe spoken, however eloquent or loving, can compare with the tribute which thisgreat audience in itself pays to the life and work of Dr. Talmage. It is a worthytribute to a worthy man. It tells the place whichDr. Talmage holds in the thoughts and affectionsof the people of Brooklyn. It is a Talmage audi-ence. Such an audience as waited on his preachingnow assembles to pay tribute to his life. We have not assembled to praise Dr. life alone praises him, all other praise lan-guishes by the side of his great name. It wouldbe idle to spend this hour in discoursing upon thegreat qualities of his mind and heart—his intellec-tual force, his originality, his spiritual fervor. Theservice is an appreciation.
