Blue sky view from Hard Rock Cafe at Zlote Tarasy Centre, across Emilii Plater, towards Palace of Culture and Science, Warsaw

The Palace of Culture and Science (Palac Kultury i Nauki, abbreviated PKiN), including a 43 m high spire, is the tallest building in Poland and, at 231 m (758 ft), the eighth tallest building in the EU. Built 1952-1955, it was conceived as 'gift from the Soviet people to the Polish nation'. It is a mix of Stalinist architecture, Polish architectural elements and inspirations from American art deco skyscrapers. The Observation Terrace on the 30th floor, at a height of 114 m, gives excellent panoramic views of the city. The Palace's exterior is surrounded by many monumental sculptures in the classical style. The Palace's circular Congess Hall (Sala Kongresowa), seen in the shot, once the location for Communist Party Congresses, is a 2888 seat theatre, opened in 1967. The guitar outside the Hard Rock Cafe, at the Zlote Tarasy Shopping Centre, rises left foreground.
