Jet engine bird strike. Illustration of one of the bird strikes that disabled the jet engines on the Airbus A320-214 that was flying US Airways Flight 1549 from New York City's LaGuardia Airport on 15 January 2009. The birds were from a flock of Canada geese. They were sucked into the engines, destroying them and resulting in loss of all engine power. The pilots, Chesley Sullenberger and Jeffrey Skiles, landed the aircraft safely by ditching on the Hudson River. All 155 people on the aircraft were rescued in what became known as 'The Miracle on the Hudson'.
