Slipped intervertebral disc, computer artwork. Intervertebral discs (red) are pads of cartilage between the bones (vertebrae) of the spine. This is the lumbar (lower back) region of the spine, with the pelvis also shown. Here, the second disc up from the base of the spine has ruptured, causing a protruding bulge (bright red), which is putting pressure on the spinal nerves (yellow). Surgery may be needed, though most slipped discs heal with rest.
