Ancient Chinese Lifan Pottery Amphora. Sichuan, Han Dynasty (202 BC – 220 AD)
Unusual two-tone Lifan pottery amphora with only partially blackened body, leaving one side and the handles brown, while the other side is black. Burnished pear-shaped body with large twin handles is decorated on each side with raised spiral patterns that are thought to represent eyes. Lozenge-shaped rim features two angular spouts for pouring and the neck is decorated with two bands of incised linear patterns. Vessel stands on a flat circular foot rim. This type of amphorae is known as Lifan after the area in Sichuan province where such examples have been found.
