Narcissus


The engraving is of a painting by William Sartain (1843-1924) an American artist who was the son of John Sartain a well known artist born in England but lived in the USA from the age of 22. William was taught by his father and studied in Paris and Italy before becoming initially a painter of heads and figures. He specialized later in painting landscapes and became an Associate of the National Academy of Design and one of the founders of the Society of American Artists. The painting Narcissus demonstrates his skill in portraying figures.
