Arch doorway from the infirmery at Rievaulx Abbey North Yorkshire

The ruins of Rievaulx Abbey founded in 1132 by a Cistercian Order of Monks are located near Helmsley in the Yorkshire Moors. It is one of the great Cistercian monasteries of medieval Europe. Many of the buildings were deliberately destroyed by the owner following the Suppression when King Henry VIII closed many of the monasteries across England.
