He was married to HannahClemens on February 6, 1840, and took charge of his fathersfarm, where he spent all his life-time. On December 3, 1847,he was called and ordained to the ministry in the Mennonitechurch, and became the first pastor of the SchwenksvilleMennonite church. In 1850 he was ordained bishop of thesame church, and later he was chosen bishop also of theDeep Run and the Branch congregations in Bucks county,and the Bowmansville congregation in Lancaster county,which he also organized. In October, 1865, he organizedthe First Mennonite Church, in Philadelphia, and became itsbishop. At his death, Boyertown congregation, in Berkscounty, was also in his district. He was a man of wonderfuloratorical ability, liberal-minded but sincere and consistent,and for popularity among all denominations he had hardlyan equal. His life wis also beclouded with sorrow. His wife diedMay 8, 1856, and of the eight children which she bore untohim, it was his doom to follow four to the grave. He marriedhis second wife, Mary Shelly, July 18, 1857, and his successoris his only son by his second wife. When, after forty-one years of active service in theLords vineyard, the Master came to call him home, he foundhim busily engaged at his post. On October 21, 1888, hepreached his last sermon in the Deep Run congregation,from the text. Rom. 14: 10-14, It was accompanied withmore than usual fervor and earnestness. He came homesick, and five days later, October 26, 1888, he fell asleep inJesus, aged seventy-three years, seven months
