Huge capstone 5m x 6m balanced on top of a number of smaller stones covering the chamber hollowed out from the rock

Excavated in 1908-9 the remains of up to 30 men, women and children were found at the site together with animal bones, shells, flints and pot sherds, in two layers of burial. The lastest burials appear to have taken place around 4000 years ago giving a period of 1000 years between construction and final use. The massive 25 ton capstone is 5 metres long and 1 metre thick and carries cut marks along its edges where hewing would have occurred.
