Already at the end of 1914, in Switzerland, an international covenant of associations for assistance to the animals on the battlefields had been formed, called the L Etoile rouge-red star. In Sweden, the Committee for female preparedness in 1917 invited representatives from interested authorities and associations, including the major animal welfare associations, to a joint meeting in Stockholm. The meeting resulted in the formation of the Swedish Red Star association on March 22, 1917. On June 6, 1941, the association's name was changed to the Swedish Blue Star.
