In many parts of Germany the tradition to raise a maypole (Maibaum or May Tree) on May 1 still serves to welcome Spring, as it has since ancient times. A maypole is a tall wooden pole made from a tree trunk with colorful ribbons, flowers and other decorations adorning it.
