William Ramsay (1852-1916), Scottish chemist, in his laboratory. Ramsay studied at the University of Glasgow, before gaining his doctorate at the University of Tubingen, Germany, in 1873. He then held positions in Glasgow and Bristol, becoming Chair of Inorganic Chemistry at University College, London, in 1887, where he stayed until retirement. Ramsay is best known for discovering the noble gases. After realising, along with Lord Rayleigh, that an unknown gas existed in the atmosphere, they discovered argon in 1894. Ramsey went on to discover helium, neon, krypton and xenon. Ramsay received the 1904 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his discovery of the noble gases.
