Ottoman wars in Europe. Siege of Rhodes (1480). Military action carried out by the Ottoman army, under Gedik Ahmed Pasha (died, 1482). The aim was to wrest control of the island from the Knights of Rhodes, a military order that emerged during the Crusades. Pierre d'Aubusson (1423-1503), Grand Master of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, led the defenders. Engraving of "Stabilimenta Rhodiorum", 1496.
