The engraving is of a painting by Alfred Thompson Bricher (1837-1808), an American artist of the Hudson River School and the White Mountain group. He was a businessman who became a self-taught artist and a prolific painter of landscapes with luminism. He is also famed for his maritime paintings. He was an Associate of the American Academy of Design and a member of the American Society of Watercolour Painters. The Mill-Stream is a fine example of his work with trees, water and a luminous sky
