It contains an area of only 13i square miles,and even the whole of this space cannot be utilised, as the surface, though as a ruletolerably level, is broken by some hills, of which Mount Pitt—1,050 feet above the sea—is the highest. As a rule the soil is fertile, and water is everywhere plentiful. NorfolkIsland might, however, have remained unknown to fame were it not for two circum-stances. Up to the year 17SS it was totally uninhabited, when a few settlers weredespatched from New South Wales. Then a couple of hundred convicts were sent to keep. POLYNESIAN FISHHOOKS. 1. Large New Zealand Carved Fishhook, of Red Pine, or Rata-wood, and Human Bone, jagged edge: with Line Hook from Honolulu, Sandwich Islands—Mother<if-Pearl and Sharks Tooth, with Brush; perfect specimen. 3. Hook fromNavigators Islands (Samoa)—Pearl, with backing of , Human Bone, and Line ; complete example. 4. Pearl Hook,from Samoa; also 5 and 6, smaller specimens in front, of different shapes. These Hooks are for capturing the Bonito, SwordFish, Abicore, Ray, Zebra Fish, &c. them company, but in 1807 the convict establishment was broken up. However, in 1825,it was again made a penal station, and henceforth, until transportation was finallyabolished, Norfolk Island became an evil proverb, owing to the character of its inhabi-tants—the most hardened of criminals, corrupting even to the convict settleme
