Fracking, or hydraulic fracturing, is a controversial method of retrieving natural gas from about 1km below the earth's surface. A fluid is pumped down, fracturing a gas rich layer and releasing gas, which is returned to the station. This illustration demonstrates how fracking can contaminate water supplies.
