The Westinghouse Radial Commutator makes possible the use ofcarbon brushes without incurring the difficuhies met with in usinghigh speed cylindrical commutators. The radial face of the commutator slides easily across the face ofthe brush and, as cross axial movements do not tend to make thebrushes chatter, there is no fear of sparking and the consequentdamage to both brush and commutator. The only movements atright angles to the radial faces are caused by the floating of thearmature in its bearings, these being slow the brush can easily followthem and be constantly in contact with the commutator surface. Made in sizes from 25 to 500 kw. Smaller sizes are built with cylin-drical commutators, as this construction is quite suitable where thearmatures and commutators are small and light and the current small.
