We have supposed this cottage to be situated in the suburbsof a town or village, and, for the sake of illustrating the treat-ment of a small portion of ground, we shall also imagine it tobe placed on a lot of ground 75 feet front by 150 deep, which,at the time of commencing the building, has upon it no trees orimprovements of any description. By referring to the plan of the first floor of this cottage,Fig. 4, the reader will perceive on the left of the hall, theparlor, or living-room, 16 feet by 22 feet, having in com-munication with it, a pantry, and a closet for books—each4 feet by 8 feet. On the opposite side of the hall are, thekitchen, 14 feet by 16, and a bedroom 12 feet by 16 the plan of the chamber floor, Fig. 5, there are four bed-. Sufficientcellar room will be obtained under the living-room, closets,and hall, and it will not therefore be necessary to excavate forthis purpose under the kitchen and first floor bedroom ; a cir-cumstance which will lessen the expense in building the foun-dation walls. This simple cottage will be a suitable one for a small familywhen the mistress wishes to have the management of thedomestic affairs directly under her own personal care andsupervision. In such a case it is indispensable to have thekitchen on the same floor with the living-room, though, ifpossible, not opening directly into it; as, in such a case, thesmell arising from the cooking would be in unpleasant proxi-mity to the latter.
