Common paper wasp (Polistes humilis) queen on nest showing its two huge compound eyes. These social wasps build wide, cone shape nest hanging from a single stalk. Commonly called "paper wasps",the nest is made from a kind of paper which the wasps make by chewing plant material such as decayed timber and mixing it with their sailica to form a paste. One dominant female (the queen) generally lays all the eggs, but her offspring help to tend the larvae. The polistes nest can grow up to 20 cm across and house many hundreds of wasps.
