First Biff House of the New Sinclair Range ' >. at Smith's Ferry, Mass. IN a recent issue of Horticuttura, I ran across a little write-up of the big house of Sinclair's, that handles the subject so well that I am just croing to reprint it here. "The house is of the most up-to- date construction in every particu- lar. It is 60 feet wide and 400 feet long. On one side it is connected to the service building by a 10 feet by 25 feet passage. ' "The house is of flat-rafter, iron- frame construction, having only two supports across it, giving an un- broken space 34 feet wide between the columns. The central span is supported by a compression truss composed gf double angles. The columns are of double angles riveted together, and all of the different members are connected to each other by steel gusset plates. The side posts and rafters are in one piece from the ground line to the column; the roof pitch being ob- tained by bending the rafters while at white heat. The side posts are bolted to heavy cast iron flanged bases. "The galvanized 'Z' shaped eave plates are 7 feet high, and the sides are arranged for a continuous side ventilating sash directly below the eaves, solid glass below the sash and 5-in. thick concrete wall to the ground. An important feature of tbe ventilating apparatus is the Tell Tale Device which is attached to each machine directly above the hand wheel, showing accurately in inches the amount of roof sash open- ings.
