The great Archaean belt whichforms the entire eastern flank of the Appalachiansystem from Alabama to Canada crosses thesoutheastern corner of the State in a band about50 miles wide and consisting chiefly of gneisseswith tracts of serpentine. It is exposed in twosections, one ending in a point near Trenton, andbroadening southwestward along the Delaware,forming the hills near Philadelphia, the otherrunning southwest from tlie confluence of the River with the Delaware, and forming theSouth Jlountain chain. Between these two cut-crops the Archfean belt is crossed by a bandof Triassic red sandstone, which runs northeast-ward and extends across New Jersey. Both thisand the Archaean belts are crossed by numerousdikes of trap-rock. Against the western flank ofthe South ilountain rests the lowest stratum
