View NE of the ruin of a Norman church built within the oval bank & internal ditch of a Neolithic henge monument at Knowlton, Dorset, England, UK, seen from the SW entrance & causeway. A Class II henge with two opposed entrances at SW & NE. This is the central earthwork of three late Neolithic henge monuments arranged in a line SE-NW. It is oval in plan with a long axis of c 107m, a bank high & an internal bank ditch wide. The church was built in the 11th century shortly after the Norman Conquest of 1066: the Christianization of an important pagan monument, possibly done to counter Anglo-Saxon pagan practices. At least two buried sarsen stones have been found by dowsing inside the henge.
