St Beuno's Church and his detached C16th shrine chapel, Bedd Beuno, Clynnog Fawr, Wales. Victorian slate chest tombs and headstones in foreground.

View looking north west at St Beuno's Church and his detached C16th shrine chapel, Bedd Beuno, (rear left). Traditionally the site was founded by Beuno in the C7th on land given to him by his cousin Cadwallon, King of Gwynedd. Excavations in 1913 discovered remains of the original C7th chapel under the C16th one. The church of 1480-1530, extensively rebuilt in the C17th, is linked to the chapel by an archaic-looking stone passage. A 'clas' church with a college of canons, second only to Bangor in importance in Caernarvonshire as a centre for religion & learning. The church, burial chapel, healing shrine & nearby well of St Beuno grew rich on the donations of those making pilgrimage from Holywell to Bardsey Island and/or St David's.
